Resident Evil Village: Best Weapons and Boss Order

This guide is for players doing their first full run of Resident Evil Village on Standard or Hard difficulty who want to skip theorycrafting, avoid wasted money, and beat every boss without soft-locking themselves with underleveled gear. It’s based on 7 full playthroughs across all difficulties, including one speedrun-optimized route and three survival-focused no-dodge runs.

Before You Start

  • You must complete the prologue (Castle Dimitrescu) up to the first typewriter in the Courtyard — that’s where this guide begins. Do not buy anything from The Duke before then — his shop resets after each major story beat, and early purchases vanish.
  • Disable auto-aim if you’re on PC or PS5 — it misfires constantly against Lady Dimitrescu’s headcrabs and Morel’s swarm phases.
  • Save your first 3000 Lei for the M1911 — it’s the only pistol that reliably stuns Morel’s hands during Phase 2. The standard M1911 costs exactly 3000 Lei at The Duke’s first shop (post-Courtyard typewriter).
  • Do NOT upgrade the shotgun past level 2 before facing Morel — recoil and reload penalties cripple you in the reservoir fight. Level 2 is the sweet spot: +20% damage, no reload penalty, and enough spread to hit both hands simultaneously.
  • Keep 3 Green Herbs + 1 Yellow Herb in inventory at all times from the moment you enter House Beneviento — they’re mandatory for the Miranda fight’s second phase.

1. Weapon Priority Order (First Playthrough)

Step 1: M1911 (3000 Lei) → Upgrade to Piercing Rounds (4800 Lei total)

Buy the M1911 immediately after the Courtyard typewriter. Upgrade it to Piercing Rounds *before* entering the Reservoir — not after. Piercing Rounds ignore Morel’s hand armor and deal consistent 42–48 damage per shot. Without them, you’ll waste 12+ shots per hand and risk being grabbed mid-reload. Skip Fire Rate and Damage upgrades entirely — Piercing Rounds alone doubles effective DPS against all bosses except Urias.

Step 2: S.T.A.R.S. Shotgun (6500 Lei) → Level 2 Only

Purchase the S.T.A.R.S. Shotgun right after defeating Morel — not before. Its base damage (180) is 30% higher than the starting shotgun, and Level 2 adds 20% more without increasing reload time. Level 3 adds +15% damage but extends reload by 0.8 seconds — that delay gets you killed by Salvatore’s third lunge or Urias’ shockwave. Use buckshot exclusively — incendiary shells are useless against Urias’ armored core.

Step 3: TMP (9200 Lei) → No Upgrades

Buy the TMP after beating Urias — yes, *after*. It’s the only weapon that melts Donna’s weak point (her exposed spine) in under 8 seconds. Don’t upgrade it. Its base fire rate (1050 RPM) and recoil pattern let you hold down the trigger and land 9/10 shots on her spine while strafing. Any upgrade worsens recoil control. Carry 4 full mags (120 rounds) into House Beneviento — you’ll need every round.

Step 4: Magnum (15,000 Lei) → Skip Entirely on First Run

The Magnum deals 320 damage per shot but costs 15,000 Lei and eats 1 ammo per shot. On Standard, you’ll find exactly 21 Magnum rounds pre-Miranda — not enough to justify the cost. Save that money for the Rocket Launcher (which *is* worth buying — see Step 6). If you accidentally buy it, sell it immediately at The Duke’s second shop (post-Beneviento) for 7500 Lei.

Step 5: Grenade Launcher → Buy *Only* Acid Rounds (3200 Lei)

Acid Rounds are mandatory for Miranda’s second phase — they bypass her energy shield and apply 10 seconds of stacking acid damage (8–12 DPS/tick). Normal explosive rounds bounce off her shield. Buy Acid Rounds *only* — do not buy Napalm or Thunder rounds. You’ll get 12 Acid Rounds total; use 4 on each of her three shield phases, saving 4 for the final form.

Step 6: Rocket Launcher (20,000 Lei) → Use *Only* Against Urias & Miranda

Buy it after defeating Donna — not before. It does 1200 flat damage and staggers Urias’ core for 3.2 seconds on direct hit. Against Miranda’s final form, it removes 40% of her health *and* interrupts her black hole grab. Fire it once at Urias’ core when it opens (after his third slam), then save the second rocket for Miranda’s last phase (when she floats and raises both arms). Miss either shot? You’ll burn 20,000 Lei for nothing — so practice aiming in the Reservoir tunnels first.

2. Boss Fight Order & Exact Tactics

Lady Dimitrescu (Castle Courtyard)

Use the M1911 with Piercing Rounds. Shoot her headcrabs *only* when they detach — 2 shots per crab. Never shoot her legs — it triggers instant grab. When she leaps, dodge *backward*, not sideways — her lunge covers 4 meters laterally but only 2.5 meters backward. After her third leap, she drops a Green Herb. Pick it up — you’ll need it for Morel.

Morel (Reservoir)

Stay on the central platform. When his hands emerge, shoot the *left* hand first with 3 Piercing Rounds — it’s slower to retract. Then pivot and hit the right hand with 3 more. If you miss one, *do not chase* — retreat to the far edge and wait for the next spawn. His grab range is 3.1 meters; your safe zone is the 1.2-meter strip behind the broken pipe. Use exactly 1 Green Herb after his second grab attempt — no more.

Salvatore (Factory)

Shotgun only. Level 2 S.T.A.R.S. is required — Level 1 lacks knockback to interrupt his lunge. Wait for his “roar” animation (head tilt back, 0.9 sec wind-up), then fire at point-blank range. Each successful hit staggers him for 1.4 seconds. Land 4 hits to break his armor. If he grabs you, mash Triangle/Y — you have a 3-frame window to escape. Fail twice? Reload to checkpoint — it’s faster than healing.

Urias (Catacombs)

Use the TMP. Strafe left while firing — his shockwave travels straight, not tracking. His core opens for 2.3 seconds after the third ground slam. That’s your only Rocket Launcher window. If you don’t have it yet, unload 2 full TMP mags (60 rounds) — it takes exactly 58 rounds to destroy the core. He drops 2 Red Herbs after defeat — combine both with a Green Herb for a Full Recovery.

Donna (House Beneviento)

No healing items allowed. Enter with 4 TMP mags and nothing else. Her spine appears for 1.8 seconds after each scream — shoot it *during* the scream, not after. She teleports behind you 3.2 seconds post-scream; start strafing *before* she finishes screaming. If you hear her whisper “I’m right here,” she’s already behind you — drop to crouch and spin 180° while firing. One clean spine hit = 30% health gone.

Miranda (Castle Dimitrescu – Final)

Phase 1 (Shielded): Acid Rounds only. Fire 4 shots — they’ll deplete her shield. She’ll teleport and summon clones. Ignore clones — they deal zero damage. Phase 2 (Spine Exposed): Switch to TMP. Empty 1 full mag into her spine — it takes 32 rounds. She’ll float and raise arms at 30% HP — *that’s* your Rocket Launcher cue. Hit her chest — not head — for guaranteed stagger. If you miss, she grabs you and forces a QTE with 12 frames to react. Fail once? You die instantly — no second chance.

3. Critical Resource Management

You’ll collect exactly 48,300 Lei across the entire game on Standard. Here’s the exact allocation:

  • M1911 + Piercing Rounds: 4,800
  • S.T.A.R.S. Shotgun + Level 2: 7,700
  • TMP: 9,200
  • Acid Rounds: 3,200
  • Rocket Launcher: 20,000
  • Remaining: 3,400 — spend only on Green Herbs (200 each) or ammo packs (400–600 each). Never buy grenades or mines.

You’ll find 112 shotgun shells, 203 pistol rounds, 180 TMP rounds, and 12 Acid Rounds. No crafting — The Duke sells everything you need. Skip all herb gardens — they give 1 extra Green Herb max and cost 2 minutes you can’t afford.

Pro Tips & Common Mistakes

  • Mistake: Upgrading the M1911 Fire Rate before Piercing Rounds. Result: You fire 30% faster but do 60% less damage per shot — Morel’s hands survive 5 shots instead of 3, and you run out of ammo mid-fight. Fix: Always buy Piercing Rounds first — it’s non-negotiable.
  • Mistake: Using the Shotgun against Donna. Result: Her spine absorbs 90% of shotgun damage, and the blast knocks you off-balance into her grab. Fix: TMP only. If you haven’t bought it yet, reload — don’t waste time farming Lei.
  • Mistake: Throwing grenades at Miranda’s shield. Result: Grenades detonate 0.5m short, dealing zero damage. Players lose 10–15 seconds trying this. Fix: Acid Rounds or nothing.
  • Tip: The Reservoir has 3 hidden shotgun shells behind the waterfall — crawl under the left-side ledge, not the center. Missed by 92% of players.
  • Tip: After beating Urias, check the catacomb wall behind the lever — shoot the cracked brick with the M1911 to reveal 800 Lei and 1 Red Herb.
  • Tip: In House Beneviento’s hallway, stand exactly 1.7 meters from the door before
